Bolivia Confirms Its Interest in Joining BRICS at the St. Petersburg Forum

In a multipolar world, we must not allow a single country to monopolize a single currency for world trade, President Arce said.
On Friday, Bolivian President Luis Arce confirmed his country’s bid to join the intergovernmental organization led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).

“We reaffirm our commitment to a just multipolar world and the formation of new blocs such as the BRICS, which we aspire to join as soon as possible,” he said during his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Arce explained that joining BRICS is “a great opportunity” that would support the ongoing macroeconomic transformations and the industrialization process in the Andean country.
“The BRICS economies have broken the hegemony of the United States… They are the hope for development, cooperation, and complementarity,” he added.
“In a multipolar world, we must deepen the use of our own currencies for international transactions and not allow a single country to monopolize a single currency for world trade,” the Andean leader said.
“In Bolivia, we suffer the threat of a hybrid war that wants to restore the colonial republic and hand the country over to foreign interests,” Arce pointed out, alluding to U.S. claims to control strategic resources such as lithium.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the entry of new countries into BRICS, an economic integration group that recently admitted the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
“BRICS has great potential for the admission of new members and, of course, we welcome and support the desire of interested partners to develop contacts on different continents,” he said, highlighting that BRICS now accounts for 36 percent of the global gross domestic product.
